Piano, Saxophone, Clarinet, Flute
At the age of 12, Trey S. discovered the saxophone. It was in the church that Trey honed his music skills early in his playing. In high school, Trey placed first in the instrumental music category for the International Garrison Award. Also, during his freshman year of college he was awarded the John F. Kennedy Jr. Jazz Scholarship, being the last recipient to receive this award.
In the Fall of 2011, Trey began his undergrad career at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he studied piano and Jazz under the direction of Antonio Garcia. While attending Trey studied with Skip Gailes and J.C Kuhl. He has had the opportunity to perform with Dick Oatts, Boris Koslov, Bob Mintzer, and John Abrercrombie.
Trey had the privilege to be apart of an International Jazz Exchange Program, A Jazz Bridge to Greater Understanding, with the University of KwaZulu-Natal and VCU Department of Music.
Working well with children is something that I take a lot of pride in, but its also not for everyone. Children love learning how to do things in their own way and at their own pace. A lot of teachers can not adapt well with different types of children and I would say that ability is one of my strong suits. I rely on inspiration and encouragement to push my students forward on their musical journeys. My youthfulness makes me more relatable to children, but that does not blemish my expectation, which parents tend to love about me.
Stevie Wonder, EWF, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Duke Ellington, Thelonius Monk, Robert Glasper, Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Luther Vandross, and Snarky Puppy.
I have taught a few children with special needs, I learned that patience and encouragement yield the best results!
Trey is fantastic and Tyler is actually practicing!
Ned really enjoys working with Trey! He has been especially flexible with Ned's switch to tenor sax and also with his interest in improvisation.
