A native of Maryland, Melissa received her BM from Shenandoah Conservatory where she studied voice under Kathryn Green and clarinet under Garrick Zoeter. She received her MM from Temple University’s Boyer College of Music and Dance in May 2014, studying under Sam Caviezel of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and currently studies voice with Jennifer Cherest.
While at Shenandoah she was a finalist for the Shenandoah Student Solo Competition in 2009 and was also accepted into the 2009 Rome Festival Orchestra Music Camp. She also received Honorable Mention in the 2009 MTNA Virginia State Competition. In 2010 she was a winner for Shenandoah’s Bach Handel Competition, and had the honor to play in the 2010 CBDNA Southern Division Honor Band on Eb clarinet and was principal and Eb clarinetist for the 2011 CBDNA National Intercollegiate Honor Band. She also received the Shenandoah Wind Ensemble Award for 2010-2011.
I work well with kids because I do my best to remember how I felt an dthought as a kid. I feel doing this better helps you understand them and helps to teach better so that you can explain information to them a lot easier. Also being able to relate to them helps you build a better bond with them. Plus I still feel like a kid myself at times.
