About Maxwell C. Download Resume

I began teaching myself guitar after two years of experience with the saxophone in middle school band. I furthered my understanding through my studies at UCLA, forming relationships with professors, music students, and LA-based professional musicians/composers.

I followed my curiosity and used my understanding of guitar as the foundation for learning piano. Piano solidified my approach to playing music, and continues to be the basis for how I teach. Few other instruments allow for a well-rounded understanding of the following concepts: melody, rhythm, and harmony.

These pivots in my music philosophy have made me resilient, adaptable, and allow me to continue to grow without the limitations of favoring one school of thought.

Why I Work Well with Kids

I want to curate these lessons as experiences that are uniquely tailored to each student. This will include encouraging them to follow their strengths, without neglecting less comfortable aspects of how they learn.

I prefer discussing music in familiar, relatable terms; lessons are an opportunity for me to help students talk about music in a way that is both visceral and academic.

This is a dialogue, not a monologue. A conversation, not a lecture. I bring the knowledge and wisdom of music closer to my students so they can begin their discovery, and find solutions to their own creative problems.
