Why I Work Well with Kids

I have been in Girl Scouts since I was in kindergarten, through the Girl Scout program I have been an assistant troop leader and been a camp counselor for multiple different camps. These expiriences are what lead me to know that I wanted to work with kids when I grew up. It also taught me a lot about how to teach with different techniques for kids who learn different ways. I have had many special needs students who have taught me how to be a better teacher and how to reach kids who have different disabilities. I have also taught middle school flute and clarinet in the Loudoun County Public School System, it was a lot of fun and one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I've been teaching music since May 2008 and love music. My goal is to pass on my passion for music to future generations. Many of my student I have had for years on end. I've gotten to see them grow up and it's a very fulfilling knowing that I have contributed to the family’s life by teaching the kids to play music and foster the courage for the students to play for their families.

Most Influential Bands / Musicians

I'm a huge fan of jazz music and always have been, growing up I loved listening to all the greats, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Maynard Ferguson, Benny Goodman, Sammy Nestico, etc. A few of my favorite bands I enjoy listening to lately are Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band, Pentatonix, Post Modern Jukebox(which is super cool because it takes modern songs and transforms them into different styles).

Hobbies

I am definitely on the nerdy side of the spectrum. I love playing all different sorts of games ranging from board games to video games. If you have any favorite video game songs you'd like to learn just let me know and I'll do my best to find you an appropriate version for your level! My friends and I table top every other weekends which is similar to DnD, but we use the cortex system. I also spend a lot of time reading fantasy novels. I love anything by Scott Westerfeld and Jim Butcher.

Favorite Movies

I don't watch a whole lot of movies but I love anything scifi! My all time favorite t.v. show is Doctor Who. I've watched all of the reboot episodes and even went back through time to watch all of the older ones starting in 1963 as well.

Places Traveled

I have not done a whole lot of traveling. I've seen a lot of the east coast, but would love to visit Ireland and Italy some day.

Special Needs Students

I have many experiences teaching special needs children and they are by far the most rewarding. Over time I developed different methods of teaching musical concepts so that if the lessons don't make sense the first way I explain them I can teach it from a different angle. Not everyone can learn the same way so you have to be flexible with different teaching styles. This has definitely helped out my special needs students in the past.
